200 million years ago: Gondwanaland, the Great Southern Continent: Our land, Australia, was as one with Antarctica and had a cool, humid climate.
180 million years ago: Dinosaurs roamed this forest of Myrtle Beech where you are now standing.
150 million years ago: Then came the Cretaceous Period, a time of upheaval and change. Continents drifted apart as pressure built up deep in the earth. Above ground this turmoil pushed up the Otway Ranges.
100 million years ago: In this shaky world, and watched by the enduring Myrtle Beech, the dinosaurs disappeared.
50,000 years ago: But the deep forest remained. Impenetrable, uninviting, inhospitable.
1803: There are other stories too - of Buckley, “the Wild White Man†and his famous chance.
1830: After Buckley came the early explorers and settlers ... tales of hard men, the timber workers and farmers - who sought, not always successfully, to tame the wilderness.
Now: Through it all, the Myrtle Forest remains - the keeper of millions of years of secrets.
Hear the tales, unravel the mysteries as you travel through time on the Otway Fly.
